California Clergy Against State Executions is an interfaith group of faith leaders opposed to the state’s use of the death penalty. Nearly every faith tradition teaches that out of a respect for life and human dignity, a secular government should not be empowered to kill its citizens. In addition to the fundamental moral question CA CASE members believe that the death penalty contravenes the values instilled by their faiths, such as protecting the innocent, caring for those that have been harmed, rehabilitation, and just mercy in appropriate circumstances. There is no value derived from our faith traditions that compels us to support a system that kills arbitrarily, recklessly, expensively, and without regard to the special needs of victims and their families.
